New Zealand (abbreviated NZL) sent a team of 71 competitors and 13 officials to the 1938 British Empire Games, which were held in Sydney, Australia. The flagbearer at the opening ceremony was James Leckie. The team of 71 included 18 athletes, 17 rowers, 8 swimmers and divers, and 7 each of boxers, cyclists and wrestlers.〔 ''Evening Post'' (Wellington), 14 January 1938 p 11 〕 New Zealand has competed in every games, starting with the first British Empire Games in 1930 at Hamilton, Ontario.
